Rechargeable torches

When you’re venturing into the great outdoors or simply need a reliable source of light for those unexpected moments, owning a high-quality rechargeable torch is a must. But with so many options available, how do you make the right choice?

Why own a torch?

In the realm of essential items, torches, particularly rechargeable ones, often don’t get the recognition they deserve. A trusty torch can be a game-changer in a wide array of situations—whether it’s navigating a power outage at home, embarking on an evening hike, or diving into the depths of your attic or basement. Owning a rechargeable torch is not only for the professionals such as police and rescue services, It can be one of the most understated tools around the home it not only provides a reliable source of light when you need it most but also contributes to sustainability by reducing the waste associated with disposable batteries.

key features you should consider:

  1. Lumen Output: The brightness of a torch, measured in lumens, is paramount. Higher lumen output means brighter light. Look for a torch with adjustable output levels – this will allow you to save battery power when you don’t need as much light, also being able to provide the best light output for the task at hand. Remember lumen output is not alway a key indicator of how far your light with shine. There are many factors of how far your light will through please see other blogs on what determines how far my lights will shine. Lumens are a measurement of light output at a certain distance more lumens = more intense light. Typically for general purpose look towards the 2000 lumens and up to 5000 lumens which will give you enough light to do most tasks. Majority of these general use lights are compact enough to fit in your pocket or come with additional holster not to mention fully rechargeable. If your wanting to see a bit further or light up a larger space look into the 5000+ lumen range and you will be able to get a wider and longer range of view

  1. IP Water Rating: Will your torch be able to withstand an unexpected downpour or a drop in a puddle? Check the torch’s IP (Ingress Protection) water rating. An IPX4 rating is splash resistant from all angles, while an IPX7 allows for submersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, and an IPX8 is tested for submersion beyond 1 meter. Majority of rechargeable torches will come with some sort of water rating be sure to check that it suits your needs.
  2. Drop Resistance: Its never a good idea to drop your torch on purpose but we are aware that these things happen and luckily the manufactures are as well that’s why they will include some drop resistance. A good rechargeable torch should be able to endure accidental drops. Make sure to check the product specifications for details on drop resistance.
  3. Torch Modes: Look for a torch with multiple modes such as low, medium, high, and strobe and safety modes like SOS and also handy features like a torch lock out. These modes can enhance the torch’s versatility and usefulness. Used right and getting a handle on how your torch works can make your torch a lot more useful and be able to last a lot longer. For example running your torch on its brightest setting is great but may not always be required, it will also burn through your battery giving you less runtime. Choosing the optimal light output will give you a better experience and longer runtimes overall.
  4. Size: The size of the torch is largely a matter of personal preference and how you plan to use it. If you’re going backpacking, you’ll want something compact and light. On the other hand, a larger torch might be more suitable for home use or car camping. Typically a good general use light will be able to fit in a pocket and some on the larger end will usually come with some sort of holster or lanyard. Remember a bigger torch may not alway be better, some can be heavy with more design towards search and rescue being able to light up large areas while others a made compact enough to fit in tight areas and be stashed away in a pocket when not in use. Be sure to know what feature you most desire before making a purchase.
  5. Construction: A torch with a rugged construction will ensure it lasts longer. Look for torches made with high-quality materials such as aircraft-grade aluminium, which offers durability without adding too much weight. Getting the right torch for your needs and know what you get will be up to the demands you throw at it. Material goes a long way with protecting your rechargeable torches LED and inbuilt circuitry.
  6. Purpose: Finally, consider your purpose. Are you using it for night walks, camping, professional use like police, search and rescue or as an emergency light source at home? Different torches serve different purposes, so choose one that meets your specific needs.
